What is the Second Year Visa 462 Program?
The Second Year Visa 462 Program is available to eligible 18-30-year-olds who have completed 3 months of specified subclass 462 work while holding their first (Subclass 462) visa.
An eligible person is someone who is; a passport holder and citizen of a Subclass 462 country/jurisdiction (table below), and; has complied with all of the conditions, and; has enough money to support themselves in Australia (~$5,000 + your airfare home).
You also need to be 18 to 30 years (inclusive) when applying for the Second Year Visa 462 program. Note – If you apply for the visa while you are 30, but turn 31 before the Department of Home Affairs makes a decision, they ‘can’ still grant you a visa, but this doesn’t mean they ‘will’.
Other eligibility factors for the Subclass 462 Second Year Visa include:
- Meeting the health requirement (you may need a health exam)
- Meeting the character requirement
- Not being accompanied by dependent children
- Paying any outstanding debts to the Australian Government
- A previous visa refusal may affect your application.
As the first-year visa, the Second Year Visa is for 12 months. The application fee is $485. The processing time is ~ 1 month.
Do you need health insurance for your Second Year 462 Application?
No – Although health insurance is not compulsory as part of your visa application, an unexpected trip to the hospital when you’re visiting Australia may cost you an arm and a leg. Your best option is to get Overseas Visitors Health Cover (OVHC).
Do you need proof of your specified Subclass 462 work?
Yes – you will need to provide some form of evidence for the 3 months (or 88 days) of specified work (and cover all of the periods you worked). Evidence can include pay slips, bank statements, group certificates, tax returns and letters from your employers. If you worked on commission (i.e. piece rates) you will need to show how you were paid and what for.
Are there any other options if you haven’t completed 3 months of specified work?
First ensure your calculations for specified Subclass 462 work are correct – three ‘calendar’ months of full time employment working week at 35 to 40 hours can be spread throughout your stay (at least 88 full days in specified locations and industries).
If you still don’t have enough days of specified work to be eligible, there are other options.
For example, you may be eligible to study and stay in Australia on a Student Visa (Subclass 500). There are numerous high-quality, affordable, courses available across the vocational training sector and in higher education. For example, it is possible to study Leadership & Management, Business or Social Media Marketing for around $1,000AUD per term in most Australian capital cities.
Student visa Australia (subclass 500)
