What happens after you apply for a student visa

So you’ve submitted your Subclass 500 application and now you’re waiting. What happens after you apply for a student visa is mostly quiet admin punctuated by the occasional message: Home Affairs receives it, runs checks, sometimes asks for more, then decides. There’s no countdown clock you can watch, but there is a clear process for knowing where things stand, and clear steps to take if something’s needed from you. Here’s what actually happens between lodging and hearing back.

Your application moves through ImmiAccount, not email

Everything happens inside ImmiAccount, the same portal you applied through. According to Home Affairs, you can use it to check messages, check your application status, update your details or withdraw your application. The department tells you, through ImmiAccount messages, when it receives your application, when it needs more information from you, and when it makes a decision. Your application also carries a status such as Received, Initial assessment or Further assessment, visible under ‘My applications summary’.

Check ImmiAccount regularly rather than waiting for an email, and make sure you’ve consented to electronic communication. If you haven’t, Home Affairs notes you won’t be able to view correspondence about your application there.

What you can do while you wait

If anything about your situation changes before a decision is made, including your address, phone number, passport details, or personal circumstances like a change of name, you need to update it in ImmiAccount. Undeclared changes can affect processing or, in some cases, put your visa at risk.

Travel needs care. If you’re offshore, you can generally stay outside Australia while your application is decided. If you’re onshore and your current visa has ceased, you’re typically placed on a bridging visa while the new application is assessed. Home Affairs is explicit that only a Bridging visa B lets you leave and re-enter Australia during this period; leaving on most other bridging visas ends it. If you think you’ll need to travel, check your bridging visa conditions in ImmiAccount before booking anything, or apply for the right visa for the trip.

How long it actually takes

Home Affairs doesn’t commit to a fixed processing time, and this article won’t invent one either. What it publishes is a live processing times guide where you select the visa subclass, stream and your application date to get an indicative estimate based on recently finalised cases, not a guarantee. For offshore applications, the department also publishes priority tiers under its current Ministerial Direction: it aims to begin processing Priority 1 applications within 1 to 4 weeks of lodgement, Priority 2 within 5 to 8 weeks, and Priority 3 within 9 to 12 weeks. That’s when assessment starts, not when a decision lands, and Home Affairs notes these figures are based on past lodgements and can shift with volumes and peak periods. What a decision looks like

Once a decision is made, your ImmiAccount status changes to Finalised, and Home Affairs notifies you by email or post. A grant comes with a visa grant notice setting out your conditions, including work rights and course requirements. A refusal comes with reasons and, depending on your circumstances, information about any review rights.

If Home Affairs asks for more information

Sometimes a decision depends on you first. Check the ‘Actions required’ section next to your application in ImmiAccount: it might ask you to attach further documents, arrange a health examination, or complete biometric collection. Respond promptly through ImmiAccount using the relevant upload or booking function. Applications sitting incomplete for too long risk refusal, so treat an information request as the priority task it is rather than something to get to later.
