Subclass 500 — Student visa

The Subclass 500 is Australia's primary student visa. It lets you live in Australia while studying full-time at a CRICOS-registered education provider, and includes limited work rights during term and unrestricted work rights during recognised holiday periods.

Eligibility

  • Be enrolled in a full-time CRICOS-registered course.
  • Have a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from the institution.
  • Meet Genuine Student requirements.
  • Hold approved Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
  • Demonstrate sufficient funds and English proficiency.

Work rights

Student 500 holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session, and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks. The 48-hour fortnight rule replaced the previous 40-hour limit in 2023.

How long it lasts

Up to five years, generally aligned with the length of your course plus a buffer for completion.
