Student accommodation in the US
Most first-year international students live on campus in dorms (residence halls), then move into off-campus rentals in later years. On-campus living is convenient and social but often bundled with a meal plan.
On-campus housing
- Dorms / residence halls: shared or single rooms, usually with communal bathrooms and common areas.
- Meal plans are often required for dorm residents and add to the cost.
- Many universities guarantee or require first-year students to live on campus, so check your offer.
Off-campus renting
- Apartments are usually leased for 12 months, often requiring a security deposit and proof of income or a guarantor.
- Sharing with roommates is the norm and keeps costs down.
- International students without US credit history may need a co-signer or to pay several months upfront.
