Working in the UK as an international student

Student route holders can work in the UK, with limits during term time and full-time work allowed during vacations. After graduating, the Graduate Route opens up unrestricted work.

Term-time work limits

Degree-level or above at a full-time, compliant sponsor: up to 20 hours per week during term.
Below degree level: up to 10 hours per week during term.
Self-employment is not permitted on the Student route.

Working in the holidays

Outside of term — during vacations, before your course starts, and after it ends — you can work full-time. Your visa sponsor defines your official term dates.

After you graduate

The Graduate Route lets bachelor's and master's graduates stay for 2 years (18 months from 1 January 2027), and PhD graduates for 3 years, with full work rights and no employer sponsorship needed. Many graduates use this time to find a role under the Skilled Worker route.

You'll need a National Insurance number to work.
Check your exact term dates with your institution — exceeding the term-time cap breaches your visa.
