Healthcare for international students in the UK
Most international students get access to the National Health Service (NHS) by paying the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of their visa application. Once paid, you can use the NHS on broadly the same basis as a UK resident.
The Immigration Health Surcharge
The IHS for students is £776 per year (and the same for dependants), paid upfront for the full length of your visa. This figure can change — confirm the current amount on gov.uk when you apply.
What the NHS covers
- GP (doctor) appointments and most hospital treatment.
- Emergency care.
- Prescriptions (with a charge in England; free in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland).
Dental care and eye tests usually carry additional fees.
What to do when you arrive
- Register with a local GP near your accommodation as soon as possible — you'll need this before you fall ill, not after.
- Keep your IHS payment reference and visa documents handy.
- Consider additional private travel/contents insurance for belongings the NHS doesn't cover.
