Healthcare for international students in New Zealand
Most international students are not eligible for New Zealand's publicly funded healthcare, so holding appropriate health and travel insurance for the full length of your stay is a condition of your student visa — not an optional extra.
Why insurance is required
Because student visa holders generally don't qualify for publicly funded care, you must be insured for medical treatment and travel for your entire visa period. Your education provider will usually specify an acceptable level of cover, and many arrange a policy for you.
What good cover includes
- Doctor (GP) visits and prescriptions.
- Hospital and emergency treatment.
- Medical repatriation and travel disruption.
Who may get public cover
Some longer work visas (generally two years or more) can confer eligibility for publicly funded healthcare, but a student visa typically does not. Don't assume you're covered — check your specific situation with your provider.
The ACC scheme
New Zealand's Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provides cover for injuries from accidents for everyone in the country, including visitors — but it doesn't cover illness, and it doesn't replace travel insurance. You still need full health cover.
