Student accommodation in New Zealand
First-year international students often start in a hall of residence, then move into "flatting" — sharing a rented house with other students. Apply for halls early, and never pay a deposit on a flat you haven't verified.
Your main options
- Halls of residence. University-run accommodation, often catered, with a built-in community — the easiest first-year landing. Places are limited, so apply as soon as you accept your offer.
- Flatting. Sharing a rented house or apartment with other students, usually the cheaper long-term option. You'll handle the tenancy, bond, and bills yourself.
- Homestay. Living with a New Zealand host family — popular with younger students and a gentle introduction to local life.
What to budget for
- A bond (deposit), typically up to four weeks' rent, lodged with Tenancy Services.
- Rent in advance, usually one to two weeks.
- Power and internet if not included — and note many NZ homes are colder than students expect, so heating matters.

- Use your university's accommodation service for vetted listings.
- Watch for rental scams — never transfer money for an unseen property.
- Check insulation and heating; warm, dry flats are worth paying a little more for.
