Healthcare in France
France has an excellent, largely public healthcare system, and international students can register with it free of charge. The system reimburses most of your costs, with an optional top-up insurance covering the rest. Procedures change, so confirm the current steps on the official portal.
Registering with social security
Once you arrive, students register — free — with the French social security system through etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr. Registration gives you access to the public health system and your reimbursements. Do this early, as processing can take time.
How reimbursement works
French social security typically reimburses about 70% of medical costs. You usually pay up front and are reimbursed afterwards, so keep some funds available for the gap.
The mutuelle (top-up insurance)
To cover the remaining share, most students take out an optional mutuelle — a complementary health insurance that tops up the public reimbursement, often to full cover. It is not compulsory, but it is widely recommended and inexpensive for students.
Budgeting for health
Build the cost of a mutuelle into your monthly budget. Note that the CVEC contribution funds campus health and welfare services, which complement the social-security system.
