Working in Canada as an international student
Eligible study permit holders can work off-campus during their studies and, after graduating, through the Post-Graduation Work Permit. The off-campus limit changed in late 2024 — make sure you're working to the current rule.
Off-campus work during study
- Eligible students can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic terms (raised from 20 in November 2024).
- During scheduled breaks — summer and winter holidays, reading week — work is unlimited.
- Exceeding the limit breaches your permit conditions and can affect future applications.
On-campus and co-op work
- On-campus work is generally available without a separate permit if you're a full-time student at an eligible institution.
- Co-op or internship placements that are a required part of your program need a co-op work permit alongside your study permit.
After you graduate — the PGWP
The Post-Graduation Work Permit gives eligible graduates open work rights for up to three years, depending on program length. The PGWP is a common stepping stone toward permanent residence through Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program.

- You'll need a Social Insurance Number (SIN).
- Confirm your study permit carries work authorisation conditions.
