UK halts student visas from four countries over asylum claims
Since 00:01 GMT on 26 March 2026, the UK Home Office has been automatically refusing new Student route applications made from outside the UK by nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan. The government calls it a “visa brake.” It’s framed as temporary — an initial 18 months — and tied to a sharp rise in asylum claims from people who entered on a visa. If you or someone you’re advising holds one of these nationalities, this matters now, not eventually.
What changed
A Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules (HC 1691, laid 5 March 2026) introduced an automatic refusal rule: out-of-country Student route applications from main applicants who are nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar or Sudan, submitted on or after 26 March 2026, must be refused.
The government’s own explanatory memorandum cites the scale of the shift behind the decision — asylum claims from people who arrived on a visa or other leave have nearly tripled since the year ending September 2022, and in the year to September 2025, these four nationalities showed some of the highest proportions of asylum claims relative to visas issued. Afghan nationals also face refusal on Skilled Worker applications under the same package of changes.
The Home Office describes the brake as reviewable and not intended to be permanent, with an initial impact assessment period of around 18 months.
Who it affects
- Nationals or citizens of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar or Sudan applying for a Student visa from outside the UK on or after 26 March 2026 — these applications are refused automatically, regardless of the strength of the underlying application.
- Dual nationals are assessed under their other nationality if they apply using that nationality’s passport or travel document, according to UKCISA.
- Not affected: students from these countries who are already in the UK and applying to extend or switch their Student visa in-country, and applications submitted before 26 March 2026.
What you should do
- If you hold one of these four nationalities and are applying from outside the UK, check current guidance before submitting — an application made now will be refused automatically, and a refusal must be declared in any future UK immigration application.
- If you’re already studying in the UK on a Student visa from one of these countries, confirm your specific route isn’t affected — the brake targets new out-of-country applications, not in-country extensions, but rules can be revised.
- Check for updates before assuming this has lifted. The government has signalled a review process rather than a fixed end date, so confirm current status via gov.uk or UKCISA before relying on older guidance.
What hasn’t changed
