Subclass 485 — Temporary Graduate visa

The Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa lets international students stay in Australia after completing a qualifying CRICOS-registered course, with full work rights. It's the most important post-study visa in Australia and the gateway to skilled migration for many graduates.

Streams

The 485 has two main streams:

• Post-Higher Education Work stream — for graduates of an Australian bachelor, masters, or doctoral degree. Stay length depends on qualification level.
• Post-Vocational Education Work stream — for graduates of a CRICOS-registered diploma or trade qualification linked to a skilled occupation. Typically 18 months to 2 years of stay.

The visa duration depends on what you studied and where:

• Bachelor degree — generally 2 years.
• Masters by coursework — generally 2 years.
• Masters by research — generally 3 years.
• Doctoral degree — generally 3 years.
• Regional study extensions — additional time may be available for graduates of regional Australian campuses.

Eligibility

• Under 35 at the time of application (some exemptions apply for masters/doctoral).
• Held a student visa in the last six months.
• Completed a CRICOS-registered qualification of at least two academic years (the "Australian Study Requirement").
• Hold appropriate health insurance.
• Apply within six months of course completion.
• Meet English language and character requirements.

Why it matters
